Dan Withee, one of the founding partners of Withee Malcolm Architects (now owned by BSB Design), built the practice through comprehensive community building on every infill project the firm undertakes. Great projects require understanding the needs of all of the stakeholders and creating convincing exhibits so that the intent can be comprehended easily. With strength as a consensus builder, he is highly successful in obtaining agency approvals on difficult infill projects.
Dan focuses on programming, planning, and designing award-winning housing that enriches communities and serves the most vulnerable in our communities. In practice since 1973, his expertise has been developed through efforts involving urban and community planning, consensus building and outreach, and agency approvals for complex urban infill projects. With a commitment to client service and delivery of hundreds of projects across Southern California, he serves as a design leader who can meet the complex demands of the development community with projects that respond in unique yet appropriate ways to their context.
His skill in the early phases of project development including programming, conceptual design and marketing, set the stage for successful completion and satisfied clients. Recognized for his design vision, his projects are characterized by their cohesion and contextual sensitivity. Dan’s experience across a wide range project typologies includes project management of high-density urban multifamily and mixed use including affordable and senior housing, commercial retail, office, and special use facilities.

Dan, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, now resides in Southern California. He enjoys various outdoor activities such as surfing, golfing, waterskiing, and snow skiing. Additionally, he has a passion for cooking Italian cuisine and has explored all seven continents, including a remarkable visit to Antarctica.
